Today, Year 5 were treated to a visit by the author Sean Taylor and illustrator Neal Layton who came to the school to collect their Hampshire Illustrated Book Award trophies. Sean and Neal spoke to the year group about the process of creating their books, before selling signed copies of their book.
Below we have a couple of paragraphs written by the children about the day:
"Yesterday, we gathered up for a ceremony for the best illustrated book award. It was very inspiring for those who dreamt to be an author one day. The actual author and illustrator of the book came and did an assembly in the hall. They read us their winning book. We solved some riddles and looked at the books that inspired. The author told us a traditional Brazilian story. After that, we had a chance to buy the book with it signed! Finally, Hampshire School Library Service awarded their trophies to them. What an experience!" - Zaina
"Back in November, Year 5 did a competition for Hampshire Book Awards 2017. We were given six books and we had to vote for one. The books were called: Imaginary Fred, Finding Winnie, Ossiri and the Bala Mengro, Pet Dragon, Where the Bugaboo Lives and Lucinda Belinda Melinda McCool. Year 5 voted on which book we wanted to win, the winner was Where the Bugaboo Lives!
On Wednesday 7th February 2018, the year group lined up to meet the Author and Illustrator. As we went into the hall, we saw Sean Taylor (Author) and Neal Layton (Illustrator). First of all, we had to work out some riddles with Sean Taylor! It was so much fun! After that, we read the story while Neal Layton did some live drawing.
Sean Taylor told us how he made Where the Bugaboo Lives. He told us about a story called ‘Lucky Les’ where you could choose where you want to go next in the story. He gave us a few tips on how to make a story. Such as: Read a book (yes reading helps too!), plan the story (even if it’s messy!) and plan the characters.
Sean told us a Brazilian tale about a boy who went on a journey to find his fortune. The moral of the story is ‘anything can come in handy’." - Harriet, Megan and Cali.
If pupils still wish to buy the book, the book was being sold by Hayling Island Bookshop on the day.
